Kana flourished in Japan during the Heian period, around a thousand years ago.

Rather than strength or dramatic impact, Heian kana values lines that are gentle like spring rain, and soft enough to seem as though they might dissolve into the air.
Instead of pressing the brush firmly into the paper, you learn to move it with an extraordinarily delicate touch — almost as if the brush were barely touching the surface.

Too controlled, and the beauty disappears.
Too loose, and it disappears again.
What we seek is the natural harmony that exists somewhere in between.

To flow naturally without forcing a predetermined shape.
